The US has iconic cities, historic monuments and scenic natural attractions. However, you cannot explore the entire country in five days. Focus on destinations within the same region to reduce travel time. This five-day USA itinerary suits first-time visitors who want to explore Washington DC, New York and Niagara Falls. Book your flights, accommodation and attraction tickets early.
Day 1: Arrive in Washington DC
Start your journey from India with a connecting flight to Washington DC. Airlines offer flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. Your route may include a layover in Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, New York or another major city. After arriving, complete immigration, collect your baggage and travel to your hotel. Rest for a while after the long flight.
If you have time, visit the National Mall in the evening. Explore the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Reflecting Pool and World War II Memorial. These landmarks look beautiful at sunset. Choose a hotel in downtown Washington DC or near a Metro station for easy access to the main attractions.
Day 2: Explore Washington DC and Travel to New York
Begin your day at the White House viewing area. Next, visit the United States Capitol and walk around Capitol Hill. Washington DC has several Smithsonian museums. Popular choices include the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History and National Museum of American History. Choose one museum because you will not have enough time to explore all of them.
In the afternoon, collect your luggage and take a train from Washington Union Station to Penn Station in Manhattan. The train offers a quick and convenient journey. You can also take a bus if you want a cheaper option. After reaching New York, check into your hotel and visit Times Square. Enjoy its colorful lights, busy streets, shops and restaurants.
Day 3: Explore New York City
Start your sightseeing with a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Book your tickets in advance, especially during summer and on weekends. After the ferry tour, explore Lower Manhattan. Visit Battery Park, Wall Street, the Charging Bull and the 9/11 Memorial. In the afternoon, walk across part of the Brooklyn Bridge and enjoy views of Manhattan. Take the subway to Central Park and explore Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge or Strawberry Fields.
End your day at an observation deck. Choose the Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, Edge or One World Observatory for panoramic city views. Visit only one to save time and money. You can also enjoy dinner at an Indian restaurant.
Day 4: Travel from New York to Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls lies far from New York City. Travelling by road or train can take most of the day. A morning flight to Buffalo Niagara International Airport offers a faster option. From Buffalo Airport, take a taxi, shuttle or rental car to Niagara Falls. The drive usually takes around 40 to 50 minutes. Trains and buses take much longer, so choose one of these options only if you have extra time.
After arriving, check into a hotel near Niagara Falls State Park. Walk around the viewing areas and watch the evening illumination, which usually begins at dusk. Check the latest schedule before your visit.
Day 5: Explore Niagara Falls and Begin Your Return Journey
Spend the final day at Niagara Falls State Park. Take the seasonal Maid of the Mist boat ride if it operates during your visit. The boat takes you close to the falls. Next, visit Cave of the Winds and walk along the wooden platforms near Bridal Veil Falls. Continue to the Observation Tower for wide views of the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. You can also explore Goat Island, Luna Island and Prospect Point.
After sightseeing, travel to Buffalo Airport and take a connecting flight to India through New York or another major US city. Depending on the flight schedule, your return journey may continue into Day 6 or Day 7.
Best Time to Visit the USA
Spring, from March to May, brings mild weather to Washington DC and New York. Summer, from June to August, allows travellers to enjoy most Niagara Falls attractions. However, expect higher prices and larger crowds during this season.
Autumn offers cool weather and colourful foliage. Winter brings cold temperatures and snow, but you may find cheaper flights and accommodation. Some Niagara Falls attractions close during winter. Late spring, summer and early autumn work well for this itinerary.
