India is a country of the common man whose hopes, aspirations, struggles and sacrifices have been portrayed through different mediums of art since the release of Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali in 1955. Some portrayals are meant for entertainment, while some others are reflective of inescapable reality. The common man represents the group of socio-political critics, the class of intellectuals, and the working class in India. The common man or the working class of India is one of the biggest consumers, the most powerful human resources, the largest vote banks, and major driving forces for growth of economy in the world. The great Indian cartoonist R.K. Laxman was the first creator of the Common Man, a cartoon character clad in a dhoti and a plain jacket, for the “You Said It” series, a daily comic strip in the Times of India in 1951. He breathed his last yesterday. Indian Eagle pays tribute to R. K. Laxman through the eloquent visuals of the common man of India, clicked by some photographers.
