What if an airport wheelchair could take you to your gate without anyone driving it? That technology is already being used or tested at several U.S. airports. Driverless mobility vehicles are designed mainly for passengers with reduced mobility, helping them travel through large terminals with greater independence.

Unlike traditional airport wheelchairs or airport buggies that require a staff member to operate them, autonomous mobility vehicles use sensors, mapped routes, obstacle detection and automated navigation to travel through designated airport areas. Some models allow passengers to select their destination on a touchscreen, while the vehicle handles the ride.

However, these services are still emerging. Some airports have commercial deployments, while others are running pilot programs or offering the vehicles only on a limited, rotating basis.

Where Can You Find Driverless Wheelchairs in the U.S.?

Here are the U.S. airports currently using or testing autonomous wheelchair technology, based on available 2026 information.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Los Angeles International Airport uses WHILL autonomous mobility vehicles in American Airlines’ operations. WHILL and Envoy Air announced the commercial deployment in 2024, making LAX one of the first U.S. airports to offer the technology commercially. The vehicles transport eligible American Airlines customers through designated airport areas to their gates.

At LAX, American Airlines operates from Terminal 4 and handles check-in for passengers departing from Tom Bradley International Terminal (Terminal B) there.
