The current plan is to conduct field trials first. Regular issuance will follow only if the trials are successful. Therefore, the announcement does not mean that the existing \u20b910 and \u20b920 notes will be replaced immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Will Polymer Banknotes Replace Paper Currency?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No. Polymer banknotes will not replace paper currency. The RBI plans to issue them alongside existing paper-based currency. If the trials are successful, both types could circulate together:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paper \u20b910 and \u20b920 notes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polymer \u20b910 and \u20b920 notes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently no proposal to completely replace paper currency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What About Digital Payments?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government has not yet determined how the new notes could affect digital payments. Pankaj Chaudhary said the project is still in its preliminary phase. The impact can be assessed only after the notes are regularly issued and used. For now, the government has not said whether the new currency will increase or reduce the use of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UPI<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Debit and credit cards<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile payments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other digital payment methods<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any such assessment would come later, after observing actual circulation and public use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is This India&#8217;s First Attempt at Polymer Notes?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has explored this type of currency before. An earlier trial involved one billion \u20b910 notes across five cities. The cities were Kochi, Mysore, Jaipur, Shimla and Bhubaneswar. The trial tested how the notes performed under different climatic conditions. Its primary aim was to extend their lifespan.
