At the Met Gala 2026 in New York, Hyderabad-based businesswoman and philanthropist Sudha Reddy made a striking return to the red carpet with a deeply symbolic couture ensemble titled \u201cThe Tree of Life.\u201d The look was created in collaboration with Indian designer Manish Malhotra and celebrity stylist Mariel Haenn. It was designed to reflect this year\u2019s theme, \u201cCostume Art,\u201d through the lens of Indian textile heritage and contemporary craftsmanship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sudha Reddy\u2019s Kalamkari-Inspired Met Gala Ensemble\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

This outfit is inspired by Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. At the centre is the Kalpavriksha, a mythical tree believed to grant wishes, placed as the main design element. Other motifs include the Palapitta bird linked to Bathukamma, Jammi Chettu and Tangedu plants from seasonal traditions, and sun and moon symbols representing time, seasons, harvests, and festivals. At the back, the embroidery is more tightly packed and becomes the main point that draws attention. A metal vine made of brass, copper, and silver represents the Kalpavriksha in sculptural form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The garment uses zardozi, marodi, resham embroidery, and metalwork rooted in Indian craft traditions dating back over 3,000 years, and follows the Machilipatnam Kalamkari style.\u00a0 Reportedly, over 90 artisans worked on it for 3,459 hours. It includes a royal blue corseted bodice and a 7-metre train. A tulle cape is decorated with hand embroidery, including designs like peacocks.\u00a0 The heavy embroidery also affects how the fabric falls and moves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sudha\u2019s jewellery was a major part of the look, drawn from her private collection and valued at about $15 million. The highlight piece was:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
