Why do we celebrate 26 January as Republic Day? The answer lies in India’s journey from colonial rule to becoming a sovereign, democratic republic. After gaining independence from the British on August 15 1947, India did not have a constitution in force. For approximately three years following its freedom, the nation operated under a colonial structure the Government of India Act of 1935.

A Constituent Assembly was constituted in 1946 with the responsibility of framing a new constitution to propel the country into the realm of democracy. Under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the drafting committee worked tirelessly for over two years, finally completing the constitution on November 26, 1949. Even though the constitution was signed and adopted on the 26th of January, in the year 1950, it was on this day that India became a republic.

So why is Republic Day celebrated on January 26? This day is also remembers the Purna Swaraj Declaration made by the Indian National Congress in 1930 to agitate against the British colonial rule when they sought complete right for self-governance. And, by adopting the constitution on the same date, it also paid respect to the long effort for self-governance.
