Northeast travel bans ease as the peak of Winter Storm Hernando moves offshore. In a major relief for millions of travelers and residents, authorities began lifting the New York travel ban around noon on Monday, February 23, 2026, with New Jersey and Rhode Island following soon after. However, even as restrictions are lifted, several travel advisories and weather-related cautions remain in place across the region.

The Great February 2026 Nor’easter wreaked havoc across the region and brought daily life to a standstill. For air travelers, the impact has been huge. Between Sunday and Tuesday, over 10,000 flights were canceled across the United States. Major international hubs, including JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, and Boston Logan saw most flights canceled during the height of the blizzard.

Air India Cancels New York Flights

Amid widespread disruption and multiple New York flights cancelled, Air India has officially suspended all flights to and from New York (JFK) and Newark (EWR) scheduled for February 24, 2026, due to severe blizzard conditions across the U.S. Northeast. Passengers are advised to check real-time updates on the airline’s official website under the “Flight Status” section or through its mobile app. For rebooking, refunds, or alternate travel arrangements, travelers can contact Air India 24/7 helpline at +91 11 69329333.

Northeast Travel Bans Ease as AirTrain JFK Services Partially Resume

AirTrain JFK operations have been partially reinstated between Jamaica Station and Federal Circle. However, complimentary shuttle buses continue to operate on suspended segments, including routes from Howard Beach and Lefferts Boulevard to Federal Circle and onward to the airport terminals. Travelers should allow extra transit time and follow airport advisories, as  AirTrain service to all terminals has not fully resumed.

What to do If the February Winter Blizzard 2026 disrupts your travel plans?

If you are currently caught in the backlog, a digital-first approach is recommended:

Use Travel Waivers: Major carriers like Delta, United, and Southwest will issue waivers for travel through February 25. Check your mobile app to rebook without fare differences.

Check Flight Status: Reconfirm your flight status directly with the airline before leaving for the airport, as schedules may change even after travel bans ease.

Avoid the Terminal: Do not head to the airport unless your flight is officially confirmed. Customer service lines are expected to be several hours long.

Monitor Rail Service: While the LIRR and Metro-North are resuming limited service on Tuesday, they will operate on modified Saturday schedules.

As Northeast travel bans ease, airports still struggle to start operations. Do you think the JFK and Newark airports should be better prepared for such blizzard conditions? Comment below and share your thoughts with us.
