As the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary, United Airlines is taking the celebrations to the skies with a striking new aircraft design inspired by the American flag. 

The carrier has unveiled a special “Stars and Stripes” livery that will appear on two aircraft this summer, a Boeing 787-10 and a Boeing 737-800. Dressed in a deep blue fuselage, the planes feature 50 stars representing the nation’s 50 states, alongside seven red and white stripes stretching across the aircraft. 

The special paint scheme was officially introduced during an event at United’s hangar at Washington-Dulles International Airport on Monday. 

United Honors Veterans 

While the livery was created to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, United says it also serves as a tribute to the thousands of military veterans who work across the airline. Each aircraft carries a commemorative plaque dedicated to service members and veterans employed by the company. The planes were painted in Amarillo, Texas, before making their public debut. The launch coincides with a significant achievement for United’s Military Pilot Program, which helps active-duty U.S. military aviators transition into commercial aviation careers.

Military Pilot Program Reaches New Milestone 

United Airlines said its Military Pilot Program provides active-duty military aviators with expedited pathways to become First Officers at the airline. Since 2024, nearly 600 military pilots have joined United through the program, and the company expects an additional 500 pilots to transition to commercial aviation roles by the end of 2027.

The airline also highlighted its veteran workforce, which includes more than 8,300 military veterans and 1,500 employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve. United said its new “Stars and Stripes” aircraft livery recognizes the contributions of veterans and active service members while celebrating American heritage.

During the unveiling event, United emphasized its role as a global carrier that promotes American culture, values, and traditions through its international network.

Airlines Join Nationwide America 250 Celebrations 

United is not alone in marking the upcoming U.S. semiquincentennial (America’s 250th anniversary) through special aircraft liveries. The airline is the third major U.S. carrier to introduce an America-themed commemorative livery this year. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines have already unveiled special aircraft designs honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary. 

Boeing Launches Freedom Plane Museum Tour 

Beyond America 250 airline liveries, the U.S. aviation sector is supporting semiquincentennial outreach by bringing U.S. founding history to local communities. Through a partnership between Boeing and the U.S. Department of Transportation, the “Freedom Plane” initiative is touring the United States carrying founding documents onboard. The program allows museums nationwide to temporarily host and display key historical documents, expanding public access to early U.S. history ahead of America 250 celebrations.
