Waiting in airport security lines is easily the most stressful part of travel. While programs like TSA PreCheck and CLEAR Plus offer relief, they require background checks and annual fees. Fortunately, a hidden travel hack lets you skip the regular TSA line entirely for free: virtual security lane reservations. Powered primarily by CLEAR Reserve technology, these programs let you book a dedicated time slot to walk up, scan a QR code and head straight to screening.

Here is everything you need to know about making an airport security reservation, which airports offer the service, and how to use it on your next trip.

Which US Airports Offer Security Reservations?

As of mid-2026, several major US airports actively offer free security lane reservations. While availability can vary by terminal and airline, the following hubs feature operational programs:

➤ Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): Known as LAX Fast Lane, this service is available for departures out of Terminals 7 and 8.

➤ Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP): Travelers can book through MSP Reserve at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 checkpoints.

➤ New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK): Available exclusively for flights departing from the heavily trafficked Terminal 4.

➤ Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR): Passengers flying out of Terminal B can reserve their screening time ahead of arrival.

➤ Orlando International Airport (MCO): Reservations can be made for both the East and West Security Checkpoints.

➤ Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX): The program spans across both Terminal 3 and Terminal 4.

➤ Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA): Operating as SEA Spot Saver, this was one of the earliest adopters and covers multiple checkpoints.

How Does the Reservation System Work?

The beauty of this system lies in its simplicity. It requires no paid memberships, no biometrics, and no long-term commitments.

Booking Window

Most participating airports allow you to lock in your reservation online starting 72 hours before your scheduled flight time. A few airports allow booking up to 24 or 48 hours out. You can also sign up onsite at the terminal using your smartphone if spots are still available.

Required Information

To secure a spot, you only need to provide:

  • Your airline and flight number.
  • Your full name and email address.
  • The total number of people in your travel party.

Using Your Airport Security Reservation

Once your airport security reservation is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email containing a QR code. When you arrive at the airport, look for signs marking the dedicated reservation lane (often branded with the airport’s specific program name or CLEAR Reserve). Scan your QR code with the attendant, show your standard ID and boarding pass, and proceed directly into the screening area. Most airports grant a 20-minute grace window around your scheduled appointment time in case of traffic delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it actually free?
Yes. There is absolutely no charge to reserve a slot, nor are there any hidden processing fees.

Do I need a CLEAR Plus membership?
No. While CLEAR provides the software platform for these reservation lines, you do not need their paid biometric subscription. This is a public service provided by the local aviation authorities to manage checkpoint traffic.

Can I use this if I already have TSA PreCheck?
No, the two programs do not mix. Security reservation lines feed directly into the standard security screening lanes. If you use a reservation lane, you must still remove your shoes, electronics, and liquids according to standard TSA rules. If you prefer to keep your shoes on, you should utilize your standard TSA PreCheck lane instead.
