Muharram is one of the most significant months in Islam and marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. Every year, many people wonder whether Muharram is a public holiday in the United States, especially as Muslim communities across the country observe the occasion with prayers, fasting, and religious gatherings.

Let’s take a look at whether Muharram is recognized as a holiday in the United States and how the occasion is observed.

Is Muharram a Federal Holiday in the US?

No. Muharram is not listed among the official US federal holidays. Federal agencies, government offices, public services, and most private businesses continue normal operations during the observance.

The United States currently recognizes 12 federal holidays, including New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Juneteenth. Muharram is not part of this federal holiday calendar.

Are Schools and Banks Closed on Muharram?

In most parts of the United States:

  • Public schools remain open.
  • Banks operate as usual.
  • Stock markets remain open.
  • Government offices continue regular business hours.
  • Mail delivery and public transportation services function normally.

However, some schools, universities, and workplaces with large Muslim populations may offer accommodations for students and employees observing the holiday. These policies vary by institution.

Although Muharram is not a public holiday in the US, Muslim communities observe it in various ways:

» Prayer and Reflection: Many Muslims spend time in prayer, reflection, and remembrance during the sacred month.

» Fasting on Ashura: Many Sunni Muslims observe voluntary fasting on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram or on the 10th day alone.

» Religious Gatherings: Mosques and Islamic centers often organize lectures, discussions, and community events focused on the significance of Muharram and Islamic history.

» Commemorating Karbala: Shia Muslim communities hold special gatherings and mourning ceremonies to honor Imam Husayn’s sacrifice at Karbala.

Muharram 2026 in the United States

Muharram 2026 began on June 17 and is expected to end on July 16, 2026, subject to local moon sightings. While Muslims across the US observe the Islamic New Year during this sacred month, Muharram is not a federal public holiday in the country.

About Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the four sacred months in Islam. It marks the start of the Islamic New Year and holds deep religious significance for Muslims worldwide.

The month is particularly important because it includes Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram. For many Sunni Muslims, Ashura is a day of fasting and prayer. For Shia Muslims, it commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.
