At 17, Indian American Kairav Mittal is bringing free yoga classes to residents of Crewe, Virginia. Through his initiative, Project Root, he teaches simple yoga poses, breathing exercises, and mindfulness techniques. Mittal started learning yoga at 12 and now wants to share what he has learned with people who he believes have limited access to health and wellness facilities.

Who Is Kairav Mittal?

Kairav Mittal is a 17-year-old Indian American who began practicing yoga when he was 12. He learned yoga under a teacher who practices the Himalayan yoga tradition. At first, Mittal did not enjoy yoga and felt it was a waste of time. But as he continued practicing, he began to notice changes in how he felt. Regular practice helped him understand the importance of breathwork and mindfulness.

Over time, he developed an interest in teaching yoga. He wanted to share what he had learned with people who might not have the same access to wellness activities. This interest later led him to start Project Root in Crewe, Virginia.

Why Did Kairav Mittal Start Project Root in Virginia?

Mittal chose Crewe, a small town in Virginia, because he already knew the community. He had spent several summers there, working at a restaurant and interning at the town hall. During his time in Crewe, he observed what he considered limited access to gyms and other wellness spaces. He also believed the town needed more places where people could come together and focus on their health.

These experiences gave him the idea to start Project Root. Instead of teaching yoga elsewhere, he decided to bring free classes to a community he was familiar with. He also wanted to give something back to Crewe, where he had gained valuable work experience.

Project Root Focuses on Yoga and Breathing Exercises

Mittal believes yoga is not just about stretching or doing difficult poses. He gives as much importance to breathing exercises and mindfulness as he does to physical postures during his classes. His sessions include simple yoga poses, breathing techniques, and relaxation activities. He encourages participants to pay attention to their breathing while practicing yoga.

According to Mittal, breath awareness is an important part of the practice. He wants people to understand that they do not need to master difficult poses to begin practicing yoga. He also hopes his classes will encourage younger people to try yoga. Mittal believes people of all ages can take part in the practice.

How Crewe Residents Responded to Project Root

Project Root started with just three or four people attending the yoga classes. As residents spread the word about the sessions, more people began joining. Within a few weeks, attendance grew to nine.

Some residents said the classes helped them feel relaxed and better understand yoga. Crewe Town Manager Phil Miscovic also praised Mittal for volunteering his time and offering free yoga classes to the community.

Kairav Mittal Develops RootBreath App for Mindfulness

Along with teaching free yoga classes, Mittal has developed RootBreath, a digital platform that helps people practice breathing exercises and mindfulness. The free platform includes a pranayama app that people can use on their devices. It allows users to practice breathing exercises even when they cannot attend an in-person class.

Mittal also created RootBreath.org, where visitors can learn more about Project Root and explore its wellness resources. Through RootBreath, he hopes to reach people outside Crewe and make breathing exercises available to more users.

Kairav Mittal Plans to Expand Free Yoga Classes for Children

Mittal wants to continue Project Root and bring yoga to more people. One of his next plans is Yoga for Young Roots, a monthly program for children ages 3 to 12. The program is being planned with support from the Town of Crewe and the Nottoway County Library System. It also has support through a grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth as part of the Healthy Communities Action Team initiative.

Each session will include simple yoga poses, breathing exercises, and short relaxation activities suitable for children. The organizers plan to limit each session to 12 children. Mittal wants to continue offering free yoga classes while developing more resources through RootBreath.

Kairav Mittal’s Project Root is helping residents of Crewe learn yoga and breathing exercises through free classes. With plans to introduce children’s sessions and expand RootBreath, he hopes to bring these activities to more communities.
