IndiGo and Air India Express plan to move some of their flights from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The move will begin in December 2026 and continue in stages through the IATA Northern Summer 2027 season. Both airlines will continue operating from the existing airport while adding services at Navi Mumbai Airport.

Navi Mumbai Airport Flight Shift

IndiGo and Air India Express are preparing to move some flights to Navi Mumbai International Airport. The change will take place in stages to help minimise disruption for passengers. Air India Express plans to begin with four daily domestic flights from Navi Mumbai in December 2026. IndiGo will start international operations from Navi Mumbai in February 2027.

The airlines have been working with Adani Airport Holdings Limited, which operates both airports, to plan the move. Not all flights will shift to Navi Mumbai. Passengers will still be able to travel from the existing Mumbai Airport, depending on their airline and destination.

Which IndiGo Flights Will Move to Navi Mumbai Airport?

IndiGo plans to progressively transfer 12 daily international departures from Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport between February and July 2027. The flights will cover 11 existing international destinations:

  • Saudi Arabia: Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, and Madinah
  • United Arab Emirates: Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah
  • Other destinations in the Middle East: Bahrain, Kuwait, and Muscat, Oman
  • Bangladesh: Dhaka
  • Indonesia: Jakarta

IndiGo also plans to introduce a daily flight to Kathmandu from Navi Mumbai. This will bring its international network at the new airport to 12 destinations. The airline will also shift the domestic connections needed to support these international services. These services will help passengers connect to international flights from Navi Mumbai. IndiGo will announce the final flight dates after final project coordination and the required operating approvals are completed.

Air India Express to Shift Selected Flights to Navi Mumbai Airport

Air India Express also plans to move some of its domestic and international services to Navi Mumbai Airport. The airline expects to begin with four daily domestic flights in December 2026. It will then gradually shift selected international services, starting with planned Kuwait services and existing Oman services from January 2027.

The international routes scheduled for the phased transition include:

  • Jeddah
  • Riyadh
  • Dammam
  • Doha
  • Muscat
  • Sharjah

Air India Express also plans to operate services to Kuwait from Navi Mumbai starting in January 2027, subject to the required approvals. The airline aims to complete the shift by the IATA Northern Summer 2027 season. Air India Group will continue operating from the existing Mumbai Airport while Air India Express adds services at Navi Mumbai.

Why Are Airlines Shifting Flights from Mumbai Airport?

Mumbai Airport handles a large number of passengers every day and has limited capacity for additional flights. Moving some flights to Navi Mumbai Airport will help ease capacity constraints at the existing airport.

Another reason for the move is the planned redevelopment of Terminal 1 at Mumbai Airport. The airport operator plans to shift approximately five million passengers in the first phase to Navi Mumbai. IndiGo and Air India Group are expected to account for around three million of these passengers. This will give the existing airport more space to carry out construction work while allowing most air traffic to continue operating from CSMIA.

How Will the Navi Mumbai Airport Flight Shift Affect Passengers?

Passengers flying with IndiGo or Air India Express will need to check their flight details carefully. Some flights that currently operate from Mumbai Airport will move to Navi Mumbai Airport. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Check your airport: Make sure your ticket shows the correct airport, either Mumbai Airport (BOM) or Navi Mumbai Airport (NMI).
  • Look for flight updates: Check messages from your airline for any changes to your flight.
  • Plan your journey: Find out how to reach your airport before leaving home.
  • Check connecting flights: If you have another flight, make sure it leaves from the same airport or allow sufficient time to travel between airports if a transfer is necessary.
  • Confirm your flight details: Check your booking again before your travel date.

Checking these details can help passengers avoid going to the wrong airport or missing their flights.

Air India Express will begin its transition in December 2026, while IndiGo plans to start international operations from Navi Mumbai in February 2027. The move will make room for the redevelopment of Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 1 and allow airlines to add more services in the future. Travellers should check which airport their flight uses before heading out.
