Madurai’s historic Meenakshi Amman Temple turned into a colourful spectacle as nearly five tonnes of flower garlands covered its prominent towers ahead of the Maha Kumbabishekam 2026. The grand consecration ceremony took place on September 17, 2026, after a gap of 17 years. Thousands of devotees gathered at the famous Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple to witness the religious event. Five Tonnes of Flower Garlands Decorate the Temple

Workers prepared nearly five tonnes of colourful flower garlands for the temple’s major towers and sacred structures. The garlands were made over two days in the Puthu Mandapam area near the temple. Some measured around 40 feet in length, while the longest stretched to about 122 feet. The large floral arrangements were then carefully transported to different parts of the temple complex. Decorating such tall structures required considerable planning, manpower and coordination.

Major Gopurams Covered With Colourful Flowers

The floral decorations covered the temple’s major gopurams, including the eastern, western, northern and southern Rajagopurams. The celebrations also included the golden vimanas of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. The temple complex itself has 14 gopurams, according to the official Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department website. The tallest is the southern tower, which rises to about 51.9 metres. During the Kumbabishekam, sacred water was taken to the temple’s 12 main towers and the two golden vimanas for the consecration rituals.

Special Poojas Held Before Garlands Were Raised

The floral decoration was not simply an ornamental exercise. Religious rituals were performed before the garlands were placed on the towers. Lord Vallabha Vinayagar at the Ashta Sakthi Mandapam near the Amman shrine entrance was first decorated with a garland, followed by special poojas. Prayers were also offered at the Sri Maha Muneeswarar Temple near the northern gopuram. After these rituals, workers began lifting the first large garland towards the eastern Rajagopuram.

More Than 50 Workers Decorate Eastern Rajagopuram

The size of the flower decoration required a large workforce. More than 50 workers were involved in decorating the nine-tiered eastern Rajagopuram alone. Teams transported the garlands from Puthu Mandapam to different parts of the temple before carefully raising them onto the towers. The work highlighted the amount of preparation involved in decorating a temple complex of this scale.

Meenakshi Temple Kumbabishekam Held After 17 Years

The Meenakshi Amman Temple Kumbabishekam held on September 17 was especially significant because the previous consecration took place on April 8, 2009. The latest ceremony therefore came after a gap of around 17 years. The main consecration of the temple’s 12 towers and two golden vimanas took place at around 7:40 am. Sacred water-filled kumbams were carried from the Yagasala to the towers and vimanas as Tamil and Sanskrit hymns were chanted.
