The Airports Authority of India is preparing to introduce a revised parking system at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. The new policy is designed to make parking easier to understand and reduce congestion near the terminal. 

No More Overstay Charges for Vehicles

One of the biggest changes is the removal of extra fees for vehicles that stay beyond the allowed time. Earlier, drivers often faced confusion over these penalties, but with the new system, no excess-time fines will be charged. This makes parking rules clearer and allows drivers to move in and out without pressure. The change also helps reduce delays at payment counters by simplifying the exit process.

Pickup Fee Rules

At Dehradun (Jolly Grant) Airport, vehicle pickup charges are governed by AAI tariff rules and vary by vehicle type and authorization status. Commercial vehicles not licensed by AAI may be subject to higher excess-time charges, while authorized taxis and private vehicles have lower or exempted fees. Recent policy updates have focused on improving traffic flow and revising the overall parking and pickup system, rather than implementing a fixed uniform reduction in charges.

New Entry System to Reduce Congestion

To tackle congestion, toll booths will be shifted outside the parking area and token-based entry will be removed. This is expected to reduce waiting time, prevent bottlenecks at entry gates, and allow smoother vehicle movement by processing entry before vehicles reach the parking zone, which improves overall traffic flow during peak hours.

Technology Upgrade in Parking System

 The airport will introduce advanced systems to manage parking operations. A key feature is Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), which identifies vehicles without manual checks, improves monitoring of entry and exit, and increases transparency by recording vehicle movements automatically. It also helps reduce waiting time at entry and exit points by speeding up vehicle verification.

AAI is likely to issue a tender within a month for a fully automated parking solution. The system could be in place within six months.
