Bhogapuram airport in Andhra Pradesh is set to be identified as Visakhapatnam in the International Air Transport Association (IATA) systems. The change follows efforts by airport authorities to ensure that the airport is associated with Visakhapatnam rather than Bhogapuram in flight booking platforms.

According to a social media post, the Visakhapatnam airport authorities followed up with IATA for nearly two months to request the change. Despite facing several hurdles and delays, they continued to pursue the matter as a priority.

Why Is the City Name Being Changed?

The airport is located in Bhogapuram, in Vizianagaram district, but Visakhapatnam is the major city it is intended to serve. Displaying Visakhapatnam as the city name in airline booking systems could make it easier for passengers to identify the airport when searching for flights.

The request was reportedly taken up through an IATA poll, following which the city-name update is expected to move forward.

Will the Airport’s Official Name Change?

No. The development concerns the city name displayed in IATA systems, not the airport’s official name. The airport’s physical location will also remain unchanged.

The proposed update is intended to improve its identification as the airport serving Visakhapatnam.

Visakhapatnam Identification in Airline Booking Systems

Once the update takes effect, passengers searching for flights to Visakhapatnam may see the airport listed under the city name Visakhapatnam instead of Bhogapuram in relevant booking systems.

This could reduce confusion for travellers who associate the airport with Visakhapatnam rather than its actual location in Bhogapuram.
