Planning your baby’s first international trip is exciting. It also comes with many questions. One of the most common is: Does my baby need a passport to fly international?

The answer is yes. Even if your baby is only a few weeks old, they must have their own passport for international air travel. Age does not change this requirement. Every passenger, including infants, needs valid travel documents.

Here’s everything parents should know before booking international flights.

Is There a Minimum Age for Getting a Passport?

No. There is no minimum age for getting a passport. Even a newborn can receive a passport. Parents can apply for their baby’s passport as soon as they have the required documents.  The same passport rules apply whether your child is:

  • A newborn
  • Two months old
  • Six months old
  • One year old

If your baby is traveling internationally, a valid passport is required regardless of age.

Can My Baby Travel on My Passport?

No. Each child must have an individual passport. Parents cannot include their children on their own passports. This rule applies to all international air travel.

Documents Needed for a Baby’s Passport

Parents generally need to provide:

  • Proof of the baby’s citizenship, such as a birth certificate
  • Completed passport application form
  • One passport-sized photograph
  • Evidence of the parents’ relationship to the child
  • Valid identification for the parent or guardian
  • Applicable passport fees

For children under 16, the application is usually submitted in person. In most cases, both parents should be present during the application process. If one parent cannot attend, additional consent documents may be required.

How Long Is a Baby’s Passport Valid?

For children under 16, a U.S. passport is valid for five years. Unlike adult passports, a child’s passport cannot be renewed by mail after it expires. Parents must submit a new application.

Does My Baby Need a Visa Too?

It depends on your destination. Some countries allow visa-free entry. Others require a visa, even for babies. Before you travel, check:

  • The destination country’s visa requirements
  • The permitted length of stay
  • The purpose of your visit
  • Transit country rules, if your journey includes a layover

Keep in mind that a U.S. passport and a visa are different documents. Having a passport does not automatically mean your baby can enter another country without a visa.

What Documents Are Needed if Only One Parent Is Traveling With the Baby?

Many countries have extra travel requirements when a child is traveling with only one parent. To avoid delays, carry:

  • A signed consent letter from the non-traveling parent
  • Custody documents, if applicable
  • Court orders, if relevant

Immigration officers may ask to see these documents during immigration checks before allowing you to enter or leave the country.

What Documents Are Needed if Grandparents or Relatives Are Traveling With Your Baby?

If your baby is traveling with grandparents or other relatives instead of the parents, it is helpful to carry a few additional documents. These include:

  • A signed authorization letter from the parents
  • Medical consent documents
  • Emergency contact details
  • Copies of the parents’ identification

Some countries may require these documents during immigration checks. Carrying them can help make the travel process smoother.

Can a Birth Certificate Replace a Passport?

No. A birth certificate alone is not enough for international air travel. Although it proves the child’s identity and citizenship, airlines require a valid passport before allowing boarding.

Do Babies Need a Passport to Travel to Canada or Mexico?

Yes. If your baby is traveling by air, a valid passport is required. For some land or sea trips between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, children under certain age limits may use other proof of citizenship instead of a passport. However, these exceptions do not apply to international flights. Always check the latest entry and travel requirements before your trip.

Does My Baby Need a Separate Airline Ticket?

Usually, yes. Most airlines offer two options for babies under two years old. A lap infant travels on an adult’s lap and often pays reduced international airfare, though taxes and fees may apply. If your baby travels in their own seat, a separate ticket is required, and you can use an approved child safety seat. Always check your airline’s infant travel policy before booking.
