India is taking one-step forward to its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions for airports by 2030. The airport experience is set to be revolutionized by the introduction of India’s first hydrogen powered buses at Kochi Airport. This move is part of a larger effort to cut emissions and promote clean mobility at aviation hubs.

The initiative is part of the Kerala Hydrogen Valley programme and aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. The plan has been formalized through an agreement between Cochin International Airport Ltd and the Kerala Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster Foundation to procure and operate hydrogen-powered passenger buses.

About India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Buses

The new buses at Kochi Airport will run on green hydrogen. This fuel is generated from renewable energy sources, and emits only water vapour when used. The hydrogen will be supplied through a new green hydrogen plant being set up near the airport.

CIAL and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) have joined forces to build the 1,000 kW green hydrogen plant and refuelling station at Nedumbassery. Once operational, this facility will not only supply fuel for the airport buses but also support future hydrogen-powered vehicles.

How many hydrogen-powered buses will be operated at Kochi Airport?

As per the deal, three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses will be purchased. Each bus will be owned and operated by CIAL for passenger use within the airport campus. Notably, the hydrogen fuel buses are expected to be delivered and in service within the next 12 months.

How will the hydrogen airport buses be helpful?

The hydrogen buses are expected to improve passenger convenience. They will also help reduce carbon emissions compared with diesel-powered models. This is expected to enhance the airport’s long-term environmental performance.

Notably, Kochi Airport is also the first fully solar-powered airport in the world. As the green hydrogen technology is still emerging, these new hydrogen buses will likely add another green milestone to history. If successful, the hydrogen fuel buses at Kochi Airport can encourage wider use of clean-fuel vehicles across the country.
