Many devotees believe that Lord Sri Krishna is still spiritually present at the Puri Jagannath Temple. But how is this possible after the Lord’s departure from Earth at the end of the Mahabharata? According to a widely held belief, Lord Krishna’s divine essence continued even after he left the earthly world. This centuries-old belief forms the spiritual foundation of the connection between Lord Sri Krishna and Puri Jagannath Temple.

Lord Krishna’s Final Journey

According to traditional accounts, Lord Sri Krishna completed his earthly mission after the end of the Mahabharata.

He was resting beneath a tree at Prabhas Patan (Prabhasa Kshetra), Gujarat, when a hunter named Jara mistook his foot for a deer and accidentally shot an arrow. When Jara realized his mistake, he sought forgiveness. Lord Krishna forgave him and peacefully departed from his earthly form, returning to his divine abode.

According to a long-held belief, Lord Krishna’s departure from Earth did not mark the end of his divine presence. Instead, devotees believe his sacred spiritual essence continued to exist, laying the foundation for his enduring connection with the Puri Jagannath Temple.

Mystery of Brahma Padartha

According to traditional belief, a sacred spiritual essence of Lord Krishna continued to exist after his departure from Earth. This divine presence is known as Brahma Padartha.

It is believed that this sacred essence came to be associated with the wooden idols of Lord Jagannath in Puri. Because of this belief, devotees worship Lord Jagannath as the living presence of Lord Sri Krishna.

The exact nature of the Brahma Padartha remains one of the greatest mysteries of the Puri Jagannath Temple. Only a select group of hereditary temple servitors is entrusted with the rituals connected to it.

Nabakalebara

One of the unique traditions of the Puri Jagannath Temple is Nabakalebara, a ceremony held only in specific years determined by the Hindu calendar.

During this ritual, new wooden idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Sudarshana are carved from specially selected neem trees.

In a secret midnight ceremony, the Brahma Padartha is transferred from the old idols to the new ones. The ritual is performed in complete secrecy, and its details have never been publicly revealed.

Origin of the Brahma Padartha

Many devotees also believe that Lord Krishna’s physical heart remained unharmed after his cremation and is associated with the Brahma Padartha. However, this remains a devotional belief and is not consistently described across all Hindu scriptures.

Regardless of the different traditions, the belief in Lord Krishna’s eternal divine presence continues to inspire millions of devotees who visit the Puri Jagannath Temple every year.

The belief that Lord Sri Krishna’s divine presence continues at the Puri Jagannath Temple reflects a timeless tradition of faith and devotion. This sacred belief continues to inspire millions of devotees who visit the temple every year.
