The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon. Located in the remote Tibetan plateau, Mount Kailash (6,638m) and Lake Mansarovar (4,590m) attract thousands of devotees every year seeking spiritual liberation and inner transformation.

But the most common question among pilgrims is:

“Which is the best route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?”

The answer depends on budget, fitness level, time availability, and comfort preference. Let’s go through every major route of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 in detail.

Major Pilgrimage Routes

As per 2026 arrangements, pilgrims can choose from two official Government of India routes.

ROUTE 1: Lipulekh Pass Route (India Government Route)

Route Path

Delhi → Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Gunji → Lipulekh → Tibet → Kailash

Essential Details of the Route

This trip usually lasts 23 to 25 days. It involves trekking in different parts, covering nearly 200–250 km overall. The highest altitude you reach is about 5,334 meters, where breathing becomes tough. It is considered a difficult journey, so proper preparation is essential.

Things to Know Before You Choose

This is a historic pilgrimage route with deep spiritual significance, followed for centuries and now organized by the Government of India for better planning and safety. However, it is physically demanding, with possible weather delays and limited comfort, especially for elderly travelers. It is best suited for fit pilgrims seeking a traditional spiritual experience.

ROUTE 2: Nathu La Pass Route (Sikkim – Easier Government Route)

A newer Government of India route that is more comfortable than older ones, making the journey easier for travelers.

Route Path

Delhi → Bagdogra → Gangtok → Nathu La → Tibet → Kailash

Essential Details of the Route

The journey usually takes about 21 to 23 days to complete. It involves limited trekking of around 40–50 km, making it less physically demanding compared to other routes. The highest point is about 4,310 meters above sea level, where the air is thinner but more manageable. Overall, the route is considered moderate in difficulty, suitable for reasonably fit travelers.
