Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, has been ranked as the world’s happiest city in the latest Happy City Index. The annual report evaluates 1,000 cities around the world based on factors such as quality of life, health, economy, environment, governance, and transportation. Copenhagen scored the highest overall, ahead of Helsinki in Finland and Geneva in Switzerland.

Why Did Copenhagen Rank First?

The city performed well in several key areas that contribute to residents’ well-being.

Excellent Public Transportation

Around 70 percent of trips in Copenhagen are made using environmentally friendly transportation, including cycling, walking, and public transit. The city also has high public transport usage and fewer road accidents than the global average.

Strong Economy

Residents earn significantly more than the national average, while unemployment remains low. Workers also benefit from generous family-friendly policies, including up to 52 weeks of paid parental leave.

Better Work-Life Balance

People in Copenhagen enjoy an average of 25 paid vacation days each year and generally work fewer hours than many other cities around the world. These factors help support a healthier balance between work and personal life.

Focus on Mental Health

The city has programs and strategies aimed at improving mental well-being and addressing issues such as cyberbullying and hate speech. These efforts contribute to a more supportive and inclusive community.

Active and Engaged Citizens

Copenhagen also stands out for its high voter participation and international outlook. A large majority of residents can speak at least one foreign language, helping create a connected and globally minded society.

Not Perfect, But Still Leading

While Copenhagen ranked first overall, the report noted that the city still faces some challenges, including higher-than-average waste generation and slightly elevated air pollution levels.

However, its strengths in transportation, economy, health, governance, and quality of life helped it secure the top position.

Other Top-Ranked Cities

Several other Scandinavian cities also performed exceptionally well in the rankings, including:

  • Helsinki, Finland
  • Uppsala, Sweden
  • Trondheim, Norway
  • Malmö, Sweden
  • Aarhus, Denmark

What Makes a Happy City?

According to the Happy City Index, a happy city is one that provides residents with a high quality of life, sustainable development, good public services, economic opportunities, and a healthy environment. These factors have helped Copenhagen become the world’s happiest city in 2025.

Copenhagen’s success shows that investing in people, communities, and sustainable urban development can make cities better places to live and work.
