Passengers arriving at Chennai Airport Terminal 1 can now board their pre-booked cabs much closer to the terminal. The airport has opened a new cab pickup point outside Gate A2, saving travellers from taking a buggy or walking to the multi-level car park (MLCP).

Direct Cab Pickup Facility

For more than two years, passengers arriving at Terminal 1 had to travel to the MLCP to board app-based and pre-booked taxis. Airport authorities shifted the cab pickup area there on July 29, 2024. Although buggies helped passengers reach the parking area, the process was often inconvenient for families with luggage. Passengers also had to use lifts and walk through the parking facility before reaching their cabs. The new pickup plaza near T1 eliminates this extra journey and gives arriving passengers faster access to taxi services.

Gate A2 Is Now the Main Exit for Arrivals

The Airports Authority of India has designated Gate A2 as the main exit at Terminal 1 because it sits directly opposite the entrance to the new pickup plaza. Travellers with luggage trolleys can use ramps on both sides of the plaza, making the route easier for those carrying heavy bags. Passengers booking Uber, Ola, Rapido or other airport taxis can now exit through Gate A2 and walk directly to the designated pickup area.

Separate Pickup Zones for Taxi Services

The new taxi pickup area has dedicated sections for different cab operators. Airport authorities have divided the two vehicle bays into seven segments to help passengers locate their rides more easily. One lane serves Ola, Uber and Fastrack, while another handles Rapido, prepaid taxis, WTi Cabs and RedTaxi. Cab operators have also set up kiosks at the plaza to assist travellers with bookings and pickup information. This organised setup should make the process easier and reduce the need for passengers to search for their vehicles inside a large parking facility.

How Cabs Reach the New T1 Pickup Plaza

Cabs heading to the pickup area enter from the Meenambakkam side and travel around Aerohub Mall before reaching the plaza. After collecting passengers, taxis leave through a dedicated exit lane. Personal vehicles use a separate bay, helping airport authorities manage traffic more efficiently. The separate lanes should reduce congestion and help passengers leave the terminal more smoothly.

Buggy Services Continue

The opening of the new plaza does not end buggy operations at the airport. Buggies will continue to run between T4 and T1 via T2 and will also serve the multi-level car park. Passengers who need to reach the MLCP can still use the service. For travellers arriving at Terminal 1, however, the pickup point outside Gate A2 offers a faster and more convenient option.

A Simpler Exit from Chennai Airport T1

The new cab pickup facility makes arrivals at Terminal 1 more convenient. Travellers no longer need to head to the MLCP to board a pre-booked taxi. Instead, they can exit through Gate A2 and walk directly to the nearby pickup plaza. With proper traffic management and clear signs for passengers, the facility can make airport transfers quicker, smoother and less tiring.
