Some records get chased for years. This one just happened. Matthew Hey, a 54-year-old from Baldwin City, Kansas, has earned a Guinness World Record for the longest natural beard locks on a living person, and the whole thing kicked off because some kids asked him to braid his facial hair about 20 years ago.

No game plan. No social media grind. What started as a simple braid eventually became a record-breaking beard lock.

Guinness World Record

On December 26, 2025, in Independence, Missouri, the beard lock was officially measured at 5 feet 3 inches, a solid 1.603 meters of natural facial hair. The previous record sat at 3 feet 6 inches, held by fellow American Rudolf Martino. Hey didn’t just beat it, he nearly doubled it.

  • Record holder: Matthew Hey, Kansas
  • Length: 5 ft 3 in of beard lock (1.603 m)
  • Previous record: 3 ft 6 in (Rudolf Martino)
  • Growth period: 20+ years, zero trims

How It Started

Around 20 years back, Hey had a regular short beard. Some neighborhood kids asked him to braid it. He liked the look, kept the braid, and he continued growing the beard without cutting the lock. That single braid naturally matted into a lock, growing about 3 to 4 inches per year, slow and steady, until it reached the floor.

The man wraps it around his waist like a belt now just to keep it out of the way.

His quote on the whole thing hits different:

“The beard came not because of what I did, but because of what I did not do.”

Not the Same as the Overall Longest Beard

Quick clarification for the curious folks. Hey’s record is specifically for natural beard locks, rope-like strands formed by locking or braiding. The overall longest beard on a living person belongs to Sarwan Singh from Canada at 8 feet 3 inches. And the all-time record? Hans Langseth, 17 feet 6 inches, measured in 1927 and now sitting in the Smithsonian.

How He Maintains It

No fancy products. No special routine. Just basic shampoo, conditioner, and daily folding to keep the lock tied up and manageable. The man reportedly considered getting the beard insured too, when something takes two decades to build.

No Shave November Connection

The timing is perfect. Guinness dropped the announcement on November 2, 2026, right at the start of No Shave November, calling it “No-Shave November inspo.” The campaign, started in 2009 by the Hill family of Illinois in honor of their father who passed from colon cancer, has raised over $12 million for cancer-related causes since launch.

Beyond the Beard

Outside his record-breaking beard, Hey enjoys several hobbies. The man is into Mazda RX-7 sports cars, Amiga computers, weightlifting, and video games. No social media presence. Low profile. Most of his friends probably associate him with those hobbies more than facial hair.

Just a regular dude from Kansas who happened to grow something extraordinary by doing absolutely nothing.

Matthew Hey’s 5-foot-3-inch beard lock is proof that sometimes the wildest records come from the simplest decisions. No master plan, no viral strategy, just patience and a braid that turned into something legendary. The beard keeps growing at 3 to 4 inches a year, and Hey has zero plans to cut it.

His unusual record shows how a small decision can lead to something remarkable over time.
