India’s latest feat in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) aviation safety ranking is a proof of the country’s commitment to improving its aviation safety standards. In the ICAO ranking, India occupied a spot in the top 50 countries with the best aviation safety, and its 48th rank places it one step ahead of China, the second-largest economy in the world.

Comparing India’s latest ICAO aviation safety rank with that of its 2018 ranking, the country took a giant leap; climbing more than 50 positions in a matter of four years that included two of the most difficult years that the aviation sector has seen due to the global pandemic. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials, this is, so far, the best ICAO aviation safety ranking for India. And this development is expected to foster Indian airlines’ expansion into the international market. 

ICAO, a Specialized Agency of the United Nations, ranked about 187 countries after auditing various parameters of their aviation safety system. Last month, an ICAO Coordinated Validation Mission (ICVM) was carried out in India as part of its Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) Continuous Monitoring Approach. According to reports, teams of the UN agency conducted audits at Delhi Airport, IGI air traffic control tower, SpiceJet, and the communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) wing of the Airport Authority of India.

ICAO assessed the Effective Implementation (EI) of six key safety areas in Indian aviation including aircraft operations, airworthiness of aircraft, and aerodrome and ground aid, and gave DCGA an overall EI score of 85.49%. Georgia, with the same EI score, shares the 48th rank along with India in the ICAO ranking.

At 99.69%, Singapore took the top spot in the list of countries with the best aviation safety; followed by United Arab Emirates (98.8%) and South Korea (98.24%).
