Indian-American community in the New York tri-state region celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with large-scale patriotic and cultural events across New York and New Jersey. The celebrations were particularly significant this year as the United States marks its 250th anniversary of independence in 2026.

Who Organized the Event?

The celebrations were organized jointly by the Consulate General of India in New York and the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) NY-NJ-CT-NE. 

FIA is one of the prominent Indian-American community organizations in the region and is also behind the annual India Day Parade in New York City. FIA has described its 2026 leadership and community activities as part of its broader effort to strengthen Indian-American engagement in the region. 

The Consulate General of India in New York and FIA have collaborated on other community events as well. For example, FIA participated in the Consulate General of India’s Republic Day celebration in New York in 2026. 

The “250” Flag Display

The Parsippany celebration combined the two important anniversaries through a large-scale flag display. 

According to the event details provided:

• More than 1,300 American flags were used. 
• The flags were positioned alongside the Indian Tricolor.
• They were arranged to create the number “250.”
• The display was presented as a tribute to America’s 250th anniversary.
• Organizers said the display received a Guinness World Records title for “Largest Flagpole Number.”

A major concert series planned for Washington, D.C. as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations has been thrown into disarray after several announced performers quickly withdrew following the release of the lineup.

The event, organized under the Freedom 250 initiative, is part of the broader national commemoration of the country’s 250th birthday. The “Great American State Fair” series was expected to bring multiple artists to the National Mall throughout June and July 2026.

But within just 48 hours of the announcement, a number of performers began pulling out, triggering significant disruption to the much-anticipated lineup.

Artists Who Withdrew 

Among the first to step away were Morris Day and The Time, followed shortly by rapper Young MC, both of whom began questioning their involvement after the lineup was made public.

Not long after, The Commodores confirmed they would also not be participating, saying they did not want to be associated with any political affiliation tied to the event.

Country artist Martina McBride later withdrew as well, explaining that she had initially understood the celebration to be nonpartisan and broadly focused on honoring all Americans.

Rock musician Bret Michaels also exited the lineup, pointing to concerns that the event had become more politically divisive than he had originally been led to believe, as well as citing safety concerns.
