Air India and IndiGo are reshaping their international networks after temporary flight cuts in 2026. Higher fuel prices, longer flight paths, and airspace restrictions, forced both airlines to reduce services on several domestic and international routes. Many of these changes were temporary. As airlines prepare for the winter schedule, most suspended and reduced services are returning.

Why Did Air India and IndiGo Cut Flights?

The West Asia conflict increased aviation fuel costs and affected flight paths across several regions. Airlines had to avoid restricted airspace, which increased flying time and operating expenses. Air India announced temporary reductions and suspensions of some international routes from June and August 2026.  IndiGo also reduced parts of its international network and later announced plans to end its widebody damp-lease operations with Norse Atlantic Airways.

Air India North America Flights: Chicago Remains Suspended

Air India has restored or increased service on several North America routes. The airline is restoring more flights to San Francisco, Vancouver, Newark, Toronto, and New York JFK. The airline’s key changes include:

  • San Francisco returns to ten weekly flights
  • Air India plans to operate Toronto as a nonstop service with Boeing 787-9 aircraft
  • Vancouver returns to daily operations
  • Mumbai–New York JFK returns to daily service
  • Delhi–Newark returns with 4 flights weekly
  • Mumbai–Newark operates three times a week

However, Chicago remains absent from Air India’s latest reported winter network update. The airline once operated the route daily during its peak schedule, but Chicago does not return in the current network update.

Air India Restores More Europe Flights

Air India also reduced services to Rome, Paris, Vienna, Copenhagen, Milan, and Zurich. The airline is now restoring many of these flights for the winter season. Delhi–Paris will continue with one daily flight, lower than the previous two daily services.

  • Copenhagen: four weekly flights
  • Milan: daily flights
  • Rome: four weekly flights
  • Zurich: five weekly flights
  • Vienna: four weekly flights

IndiGo Ends Its Norse Atlantic Widebody Operations

IndiGo will discontinue its widebody operations in October. Its damp-lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways will end on October 31, 2026. IndiGo used Boeing 787-9 aircraft to operate long-haul flights to Amsterdam, London Heathrow, Manchester, and Copenhagen. IndiGo will return the leased aircraft to the Norse Atlantic. However, flights to London Heathrow and Manchester will not continue under the current widebody arrangement.

IndiGo has ordered Airbus A350 aircraft for its future long-haul plans. The airline expects its first A350 deliveries from late 2027 or early 2028.

Australia Gets More Air India Flights

Air India is increasing its focus on Australia. Melbourne will receive more flights and larger aircraft, while Sydney returns to daily service. The airline plans to operate Boeing 777 aircraft on Melbourne flights and increase the schedule to 11 weekly services. Sydney will return to daily operations. These changes will give travellers more Air India flight options between India and Australia.

Asia and South Asia Flights Return

Air India is restoring several services across the Far East, Southeast Asia, and SAARC region. The airline resumed flight routes to Shanghai and plans to increase services on routes such as:

  • Delhi to Singapore
  • Mumbai to Singapore
  • Delhi to Kuala Lumpur
  • Mumbai to Bangkok
  • Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City
  • Delhi to Bangkok

Air India Express will operate the Chennai to Singapore service instead of Air India. IndiGo is also bringing back flights to Shanghai, Krabi, Hong Kong, and Langkawi. However, Ho Chi Minh City does not return to IndiGo’s latest network plan. The airline instead announced a new Mumbai–Hanoi service.

How Do These Airline Changes Affect Travellers?

Air India & IndiGo are restoring most international flights, but route schedules may still change because of fuel prices, demand, and airspace conditions. Before booking, travellers should:

  • Check the latest flight schedule
  • Compare layover times and total journey duration
  • Review airline baggage rules
  • Confirm the aircraft type, especially on long-haul routes
  • Read fare-change and cancellation conditions carefully

IndiGo and Air India are rebuilding their international networks, but they are doing so carefully.  Ho Chi Minh City and Chicago remain the major exceptions in the latest network changes.
