Which Indian City Gets You a Faster US Visa Interview in 2026
Source: vecteezy

The latest visa wait time data released by the US Department of State shows clear differences in US visa interview availability across major Indian cities. For applicants planning a US visit, choosing the right visa application location can significantly affect how quickly they get an interview slot.

The data mainly focuses on B1/B2 visitor visas, along with student (F, M, J), work (H, L, O, P, Q), and crew or transit categories. Among all cities, one location stands out as the fastest option for visitor visa interviews.

Chennai leads with the fastest US visa interview availability

Among India’s major visa processing centres, Chennai shows the shortest waiting period for B1/B2 visitor visas.

  • Average wait time: around 4 months
  • Next available appointment: roughly 4 months

This makes Chennai one of the most efficient choices for US tourist and business visa applicants. The “average” and “next available” timelines are nearly the same, which suggests relatively stable appointment flow.

Mumbai and Kolkata show the longest delays

At the other end of the spectrum, Mumbai and Kolkata report significantly longer waits.

  • Mumbai
    • Average wait: approx. 7 months
    • Next available: about 7.5 months
  • Kolkata
    • Average wait: nearly 7 months
    • Next available: close to 7 months

For applicants prioritizing speed, these locations currently appear less favorable for B1/B2 visa scheduling.

Hyderabad and New Delhi sit in the middle range

Two major hubs show moderate delays:

Hyderabad

  • Average wait: about 5 months
  • Next available: in the range of  8 months

New Delhi

  • Average wait: roughly 5 months
  • Next available: Approx. 7 months

While not as fast as Chennai, these cities still offer better conditions than Mumbai or Kolkata depending on slot movement.

Student and work visas are much faster across India

The data shows that non-tourist categories generally move faster across all centres.

For F, M, and J student/exchange visas:

  • Chennai: about 1 month
  • Mumbai and New Delhi: about 1 month
  • Hyderabad: around 2.5 months
  • Kolkata: roughly 3.5 months

For work visas (H, L, O, P, Q):

  • Most cities: 1 to 3 months range
  • Chennai: around 3.5 months
  • Hyderabad: about 3 months

Crew and transit visas are even faster in most locations, often within a month or less.

If you choose your visa location carefully and check for new slots often, you may get an earlier US visa interview.

For post-visa travel, Indian Eagle offers flight deals between India and the USA, helping travelers find more affordable international fares.

On May 8, graduates of North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles gathered at Reynolds Coliseum for what they expected to be a traditional commencement ceremony. But the event quickly became a major headline in Indian-origin US news coverage.

Anil Kochhar, an Indian-American philanthropist, stepped onto the stage as commencement speaker. What followed was an announcement that immediately spread across social media and news platforms.

In honor of his father, Prakash Chand Kochhar, he declared that he and his wife Marilyn Kochhar would pay off all final-year student loans for the graduating class of 2025–26. The gift covered 176 undergraduate students and 26 master’s students, with estimates of the total US student loan debt relief ranging between $4 million and $8 million.

The reaction was instant.

Cheers, shock, and emotional celebrations filled the hall as students realized they were witnessing a rare moment of large-scale US student loan forgiveness.

Who is Anil Kochhar?

Anil Kochhar, an Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist, is a major benefactor of North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles. He co-founded and serves as vice chairman of Outcomes Health Info Solutions, a US-based healthcare technology company that serves pharmacies, payers, and pharmaceutical firms.

The Inspiring Journey of Prakash Chand Kochhar

The story begins in 1946, when Prakash Kochhar traveled from Punjab, India, to Raleigh. Like many early Indians abroad, he came to the United States with limited resources but strong ambition, enrolling at North Carolina State University to study textile manufacturing.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1950 and his master’s degree in 1952. He later worked at Industrial Rayon in New York City as a sales service coordinator, building a life in the United States through education and opportunity.

Kochhar Family’s Philanthropic Legacy at NC State

The Kochhar family’s connection to education continued beyond that. After Prakash Chand Kochhar passed away in 1985, his wife Christine Hayes Kochhar established the Prakash Chand Kochhar Memorial Textile Scholarship in 1986 at North Carolina State University. This marked the beginning of long-term philanthropic support for textile education.

Over the years, the family has continued contributing through multiple endowments, including:

  • The Prakash Chand Kochhar Dean’s Chair Endowment
  • The Prakash Chand Kochhar Endowed Faculty Fund
  • The Prakash Chand Kochhar Graduate Support Endowment

These funds have been supporting faculty research, student development, travel, and academic growth at Wilson College.

For many Indian-origin students in the US, this gesture meant less financial stress for families who often spend significantly on education.

US proposes 30% hike in minimum wages under H1B visa programme
Source: Vecteezy

The United States Department of Labor has proposed a major revision to wage rules under the H-1B visa program. The plan aims to increase prevailing wages paid to foreign workers by approximately 20% to 33% across different skill levels. The stated goal is to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at significantly lower salaries than US workers in similar roles.

Details of the Proposal

The rule change applies to multiple visa and labor certification programs, including H-1B, H-1B1, E-3, and Permanent Labor Certification.

Under the proposed wage structure:

  • Level I (entry-level workers): Proposed wage is $97,746 per year, up from about $73,279, marking an increase of 33.39%.
  • Level II (qualified workers): Proposed wage is $123,212, compared to $98,987, an increase of 24.47%.
  • Level III (experienced workers): Proposed wage is $147,333, up from $121,979, a rise of 20.79%.
  • Level IV (fully experienced/senior roles): Proposed wage is $175,464, compared to $144,202, an increase of 21.68%.

The Department of Labor has stated that current wage benchmarks are based on a system that has not been significantly updated in around 20 years.

Reason Behind the Change

Officials argue that the existing system allows employers in the US to hire foreign workers at wages lower than those paid to similarly skilled US employees. The proposed revision is intended to correct this imbalance and strengthen wage protections for domestic workers.

The rule is titled “Improving Wage Protections for the Temporary and Permanent Employment of Certain Foreign Nationals in the United States.”

Also Read: H1B Visa Wage-Based New Rule

Public Response and Concerns

The proposal has triggered mixed reactions across industries. Supporters say it could help prevent wage suppression and ensure fair competition in the labor market.

However, critics warn that the higher wage thresholds may make it difficult for smaller companies and startups to hire entry-level foreign workers. They also argue that it could reduce hiring flexibility in sectors that depend heavily on fresh graduates.

The public comment period is open until May 26. After the Department reviews the feedback, it will decide whether to finalize or modify the rule.

This proposal follows earlier immigration-related changes, including a $100,000 fee introduced in September 2025 for certain H-1B applicants applying from outside the US. That policy was introduced through a presidential order and was part of broader efforts to tighten skilled immigration rules.

A previous attempt to revise wage levels during an earlier administration faced legal challenges and was ultimately not implemented.

Indian parents planning to visit their children in the United States may now have a faster visa appointment option. The US Consulate in Kolkata is offering priority B1/B2 visa appointment slots for parents aged 50 and above who want to visit their children legally living in the US. This option is available only at the Kolkata consulate for now and may help eligible parents get interview appointments faster.

The update is important for many Indian families separated across countries. Parents often travel to the US to attend family events, support their children during childbirth, spend time with grandchildren, or visit during holidays. With long visitor visa wait times still affecting many applicants in India, this new priority category could bring relief to qualified parents.

US Consulate in Kolkata Announcement

Parents aged 50 and above visiting children legally residing in the United States can now benefit from priority appointment slots. The consulate described the move under the theme “America First in Family Values” and said it is helping qualified travelers with shorter wait times. This means eligible parents seeking a B1/B2 visitor visa have a chance of getting a priority visa appointment when they choose Kolkata as their visa interview site. However, the update does not mean every applicant will automatically qualify. Applicants must still meet visa requirements and provide accurate travel information.

Who can apply under this priority visa slot category?

The priority appointment slots are for parents who are 50 years of age or older and want to visit their children residing legally in the United States. Reports say this option is currently available for Kolkata applicants under the B1/B2 visa process. Eligible applicants may need to show that their child is legally residing in the US. They may also need to prove the purpose of travel, family relationship, financial ability, and strong ties to India. These details are important because the priority slot only helps with appointment access. Visa approval still depends on the consular officer’s decision.

New Visa Categories for Kolkata Applicants

Applicants choosing Kolkata for their visa interview can now see new B1/B2 appointment categories. These include parents visiting children legally living in the US, business travelers, tourists, and applicants who recently had a visa refusal. This new system may help the consulate sort applications by travel purpose and make the appointment process clearer for eligible applicants.

What is a B1/B2 visa?

A B1/B2 visa is a temporary non-immigrant visitor visa for those planning to travel to the United States for business or tourism purposes or both. Parents visiting their children in the US generally apply under the B2 visitor purpose, while business travelers may use the B1 category or even apply for B1/B2 visa, depending on the purpose of the trip. This visa is suitable for parents visiting the US for tourism, family events, or spending time with their children and grandchildren.

Does having a priority appointment ensure visa approval?

No. The priority appointment does not necessarily mean that the visa will be approved. It simply makes it easier for eligible candidates to have an interview. The final decision will ultimately depend on the applicant’s profile, purpose of travel, financial condition, past travel record, and ties with India. The parents must be prepared to justify their travel plans, length of stay, family members they plan to visit , and their return to India.

Documents Parents Should Keep Ready

Parents applying for a B1/B2 visa under this category should prepare their documents carefully. Useful documents may include:

  • Valid passport
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Visa fee payment receipt
  • Appointment confirmation
  • Proof of relationship with the child
  • Child’s legal status proof in the US
  • Invitation letter from the child
  • Applicant’s financial documents
  • Pension, employment, property, or family-tie documents in India
  • Travel plan, if available

Applicants should carry genuine documents and avoid giving unclear or inconsistent answers during the visa interview.

Why is this update important for Indian families?

This update may bring relief to many Indian parents waiting to visit their children in America. In recent years, long B1/B2 visa appointment wait times have affected travel planning for families. Parents often delay trips for childbirth support, weddings, medical support, and festive reunions because visa appointments are not easily available. The Kolkata priority appointment system can be especially useful for older parents who have a clear travel purpose and children legally living in the US. It also gives families a more organized route to plan visits instead of waiting endlessly for general tourist visa slots.

Kolkata Opens Separate Scheduling for Business Travelers

Along with the parent-focused priority category, the Kolkata consulate has also announced a separate visa scheduling system for verified business travelers. This is expected to support business travel, trade, and investment connections between India and the United States. This separate business category may help verified business travelers access a more structured appointment scheduling process.

The new priority B1/B2 visa appointment slots at the US Consulate in Kolkata may help parents aged 50 and above visit their children in the United States with shorter appointment wait times. However, this update does not guarantee visa approval. Parents should prepare their documents carefully, provide accurate information, and clearly show the correct temporary travel purpose.

Once the visa is approved, families can book affordable international flights with Indian Eagle for a smooth and budget-friendly journey.

Traveling to the United States comes with certain legal responsibilities at the border, and one of the most important is completing the customs declaration process. The information provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) explains what travelers must declare, what is restricted, and the legal obligations tied to entering the country.

Here’s everything explained step by step in this U.S. customs declaration form guide.

Role of U.S. Customs and Border Protection

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is responsible for safeguarding the United States by controlling what enters and exits the country. This includes enforcing trade, immigration, and agricultural regulations at ports of entry. CBP officers have the authority to inspect travelers, luggage, and personal belongings to ensure compliance with U.S. laws.

What You Must Declare When Entering the U.S.

All travelers, whether U.S. residents or visitors, must declare items they bring into the United States when entering the country. The rules differ slightly based on residency, but the requirement to report items remains the same.

  • U.S. residents must declare all items acquired abroad, including gifts, purchases, or goods obtained during travel.
  • Visitors (non-residents) must declare the value of all items that will remain in the United States, including gifts or merchandise intended to stay in the country.

In all cases, items must be listed in U.S. dollars, and gift items must be reported at their retail value, not sentimental or estimated value.

Duty-Free Allowances and Taxes

When arriving in the United States, travelers can often bring a certain amount of goods without tax under duty-free exemptions. The exact limit depends on whether they are residents or non-residents.

  • U.S. residents can usually bring up to $800 worth of goods duty-free.
  • Non-residents may qualify for limited duty-free exemptions depending on the type and value of goods they are carrying.

Any amount above the duty-free limit is subject to tax or duty. In some cases, for returning residents, a flat duty rate may apply to the first $1,000 of value above the exemption, depending on classification. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers decide the final duty amount. They review what is declared and assess the applicable charges at the port of entry.

Restricted and Prohibited Items

Certain items are strictly controlled or prohibited when entering the United States. These rules are in place to protect public health, agriculture, wildlife, and safety. Some items are commonly restricted and must be carefully declared or may not be allowed at all. These include:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Plants and soil
  • Meat and animal products
  • Live animals
  • Wildlife products, including certain animal-derived goods

If these items are not properly declared, passengers may face consequences such as confiscation, financial penalties, or possible legal proceedings. In addition to restricted goods, some items are completely prohibited from entry. These include:

  • Controlled substances, such as illegal drugs
  • Obscene or prohibited materials
  • Toxic or hazardous substances
  • Counterfeit goods or items that violate intellectual property rights

Currency Reporting Requirements

Travelers may carry any amount of money into or out of the United States. However, if the total value exceeds $10,000 USD, it must be reported to Customs and Border Protection. This requirement applies to a range of monetary instruments, including:

  • Cash, whether in U.S. dollars or foreign currency
  • Foreign nationals’ checks
  • Bearer instruments such as checks, bonds, or stocks

The required document for reporting is FinCEN Form 105, which must be completed when crossing the border with amounts above the threshold. There are also important compliance rules to keep in mind. Failure to report can lead to seizure of funds and possible legal penalties. The reporting requirement applies even if someone else is physically carrying the money on your behalf.

Border Check Process

CBP officers may conduct routine checks when passengers arrive at the U.S. border. These checks are part of standard procedures to verify travel details and ensure compliance with regulations.

During this process, officers may:

  • Ask questions about your travel plans and belongings
  • Inspect luggage or personal items
  • Select passengers for additional screening

If a traveler is chosen for extra screening, they are still entitled to professional and respectful treatment by CBP officers. Supervisors and passenger service representatives are available if assistance is needed. Feedback forms may also be provided for sharing concerns or experiences.

The customs declaration process is a legal requirement. Being honest and accurate helps ensure smooth entry into the United States and avoids penalties or delays. When in doubt, always declare, as stated in the U.S. customs declaration form guide.

FAQs

The United States offers different student visas based on the type of education an international student plans to pursue. While the F-1 visa is intended for academic studies, the M-1 visa is specifically designed for vocational and non-academic training programs.

For anyone exploring this category, our M-1 visa guide helps explain how it supports students who want practical, career-focused education instead of traditional university degrees. It is mainly used for technical learning, hands-on training, and specialized certification programs.

About the U.S. M-1 Visa

The U.S. non-immigrant student visa category is for international students enrolled in vocational or non-academic programs in the United States. These programs are usually skill-based and career-oriented. They focus on practical training instead of academic theory. Students typically attend technical schools, trade institutes, or professional training centers approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Unlike the F-1 visa, this visa category is not intended for students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

Types of Programs Covered Under this Visa

The visa category supports many technical training programs, including:

  • Automotive and mechanical training
  • Culinary arts and hospitality courses
  • Aviation and flight training
  • Cosmetology and beauty programsFin
  • Fashion design and merchandising
  • Electrical and technical certifications
  • Welding and industrial training
  • Healthcare technician programs
  • Computer networking and technical support
  • Professional trade certifications

These programs usually lead to diplomas, certificates, or professional licenses instead of academic degrees.

M-1 Visa Rules and Structure

This student visa has a structured format that differs significantly from the F-1 student visa.

Fixed Course Structure: M-1 students generally follow a fixed and predefined training schedule. The program length, coursework, and completion timeline are clearly determined by the institution. Students usually cannot switch freely between academic levels or extend studies repeatedly like many F-1 students can.

Focus on Hands-On Training: The visa is designed for practical learning. Most programs emphasize workshops, labs, simulations, or industry training rather than classroom-based academic research. This option is attractive for students who want immediate career skills.

Limited Duration of Stay: Students are admitted for the duration of their training program, plus a short grace period. Extensions are possible in some cases, but the visa is generally more restrictive than the F-1 category.

Strict Financial Requirements: Applicants must show they can pay for tuition, living expenses, and the full duration of their stay in the United States.

Work Restrictions

One of the most important aspects of this category is its strict employment limitation. Students considering this visa must understand that work opportunities are significantly more restricted than those available to F-1 students.

Practical Training for Students

Although regular employment is restricted, students in this category may qualify for limited practical training after completing their program. This training must directly relate to the field of study and is intended to provide real-world experience connected to the student’s education.

When Can Practical Training Begin?

Practical training is only allowed after the student completes the full course of study. Learners cannot begin practical training before completing their studies.  Students must also receive approval from both their Designated School Official (DSO) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Duration of Practical Training

The training period is limited under federal immigration regulations. Typically, international vocational students receive:

  • One month of practical training for every four months of full-time study
  • A maximum total limit of six months of training

For example:

  • A student completing 12 months of study may qualify for about 3 months of practical training
  • A student completing 24 months of study may qualify for the maximum 6 months

USCIS confirms these limits in its official student employment guidelines.

Employment Authorization Requirement

Employment Conditions & Rules
Source: Vecteezy

Learners under this visa type cannot begin working immediately after graduation. They must first:

  • Receive a recommendation from their school official
  • File Form I-765 for employment authorization
  • Wait for approval from USCIS
  • Receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)

Students are not allowed to start training until the authorization is officially approved.

This program offers several benefits for students seeking practical, career-oriented education in the United States. It allows students to gain hands-on training and industry-relevant skills through specialized technical programs that are often shorter than traditional academic degrees. This makes it a suitable option for individuals who want focused technical training and faster entry into the workforce.

Overall, this information provides a clear understanding of vocational education in the United States, as covered in this M-1 visa guide.

Note: This article is for general informational purposes only. Immigration rules for this visa category may change over time. Always refer to official U.S. government sources or consult a qualified immigration advisor for the most accurate and up-to-date guidance.
