After updating the OCI rules and OCI services fee structure (effective 1 April 2026), India announced e-OCI Card, the electronic version of physical OCI booklets, on 1 May 2026. Finally, India’s home minister Amit Shah launched digital e-OCI Card on 30 June having digitized the process, from application to documentation to reissuance, through the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026. The digital overhaul of the OCI system for Indian-origin foreign citizens, their foreign spouses and children, makes it smarter, safer, and simpler.

e-OCI is nothing but the digital version of the OCI Card, eliminating the hassles of carrying and the worries of losing a physical booklet. You can download your digital OCI Card on phone and access it seamlessly anytime, anywhere. Both new applicants and existing users can get e-OCI Cards from the portal. Your existing physical OCI cards remain valid even after you get the electronic version.

“Even if you are upgraded to e-OCI from the physical card, we recommend carrying the physical booklet while traveling to and from India, until foreign airlines’ staff and crew members get acclimatized with the changes. Some airlines, especially European and American, insist on checking physical travel documents unless they get an official bulletin from the Indian Embassy,” said Sourav Agarwal, Senior Editor at Indian Eagle, a leading air-ticketing partner of overseas Indians.

The new digital OCI process eliminated reissuance of physical booklets to those who get a new passport after the age of 20 years. The cardholders above 20 years need to update only their new passport details on the OCI portal. Physical booklets won’t be reissued any more.

India’s Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 removed the earlier requirement to submit applications “in duplicate” by digitalizing the OCI documentation.

Since the electronic OCI can be accessed anywhere and anytime, you may never need an Exit Permit to fly out of India unless your OCI card is revoked just before your departure from India.

By December 2026, e-OCI shall integrate access to facial recognition lanes for touchless entry or exit at international airports in India.

What is e-OCI?
