The Department of Homeland Security\u2019s notice regarding this move was first published on the website of<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2017\/09\/18\/2017-19365\/privacy-act-of-1974-system-of-records\" rel=\"nofollow\">Federal\u00a0 Register<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 on September 18, 2017. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has taken the proposal a step forward in September 2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The process of obtaining social media identification may also apply to green card holders seeking re-entry to the United States after two years of stay away from the US. However, disclosure of passwords to their social media accounts will not be forced upon them. Direct collection of green card and US citizenship applicants&#8217; social media identifiers will help streamline the current process of obtaining publicly available social media information, according to the DHS.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18630 size-full\" title=\"US to Collect Social Media and Search Data of Immigrants, Green Card Holders, Naturalized Citizens\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indianeagle.com\/travelbeats\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/US-to-collect-immigrants-social-media-details-1.jpg\" alt=\"DHS news, USCIS news, USA immigrants, US security measures\" width=\"685\" height=\"470\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In order to broaden the files on immigrants and some citizens with more information publicly available online, <strong>the Department of Homeland Security plans to collect data from social media details and search engine results about green card and US citizenship applicants. The online data mostly includes<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/indianeaglellc\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Facebook<\/a><\/span> posts and Google results<\/strong>. The final version of the US government\u2019s plan to bring green card and citizenship applicants within the purview of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianeagle.com\/travelbeats\/new-requirement-for-tourist-and-immigrant-visas-to-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">social media vetting policy<\/span><\/a> was made on October 18, 2017, but it was not put into effect back then. Below is what the document in the Federal Register says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe government will &#8220;expand the categories of records&#8221; collected &#8220;to include country of nationality, country of residence, the USCIS Online Account Number, social media handles, aliases, associated identifiable information, and search results&#8221; and will &#8220;update record source categories to include publicly available information obtained from the Internet\u2026.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposal to collect details about immigrants, naturalized citizens and green card holders from the publicly available information sources like Google search results, Facebook posts, tweets, public institutions, interviews, public records and commercial data providers will help to improve the content of \u201cAlien Files\u201d, which are detailed profiles of immigrants in the archive maintained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alien Files contain such sensitive data as fingerprints, travel histories, health and education records. Everyone from federal officers to judges to border agents can access \u201cAlien Files\u201d<\/strong> to check and collect data about individuals for inspection. Since Alien Files are easily accessible to everyone in the government, the plan to collect social media and search data on individuals has raised concerns about the right to privacy and free speech in America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianeagle.com\/travelbeats\/new-form-ds-5535-for-us-visa-applicants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">social media vetting<\/span><\/a> for additional security is not limited to foreign nationals applying for US visas in different categories.<\/strong> The \u201cextreme vetting\u201d is already in effect to keep visa applicants with wrong intentions or suspected activities away from the US borders.
