Until recently I thought all people of Indian descent regardless of their citizenship status were considered NRIs. Any NRI visiting India could then be hauled up by the ITO and asked to lodge tax returns and declare their overseas earnings. Is that what is happening, or about to happen? The article needs clarification: who exactly is considered an NRI? This is very vague self-assumed identity, and one can deny being an NRI by virtue of having a foreign passport and a non-Indian sounding name (e.g. John de Silva).
